Random AP comment and Asperger’s syndrome

I don’t have it in me to write a real entry today (although I’ve been
writing it in my head).  So here’s a couple random comments.
I’ll try to give you something real tomorrow.

1.  For those of you out there interested in Asperger’s syndrom and autism, go here
to listen to this interesting article about a group who is actually
working to get people with autism accepted rather than being viewed as
just another problem to be fixed.  You can read a good chunk of it
at the site but I’d recommend listening – there’s an interesting
section with a woman who is mute but “speaks” through her
computer.

2.  A thought on attachment parenting in 87 degrees with 71%
humidity:  As I walked to the grocery store tonight to get some
milk, I saw an infant in a stroller next to a couple having dinner
outside at our local Donna’s Cafe.
I thought to myself, “Someone should be holding that baby, not letting
it sit all alone in that stroller!”  And then I thought, “But,
yuck, just think how much more gross and sweaty you’d feel with all
that body heat next to you.”  I think it must be easier to be a
good AP mama in Alaska!  (Or inside in air conditioning!)

Reading

I spent my Sunday afternoon napping and reading this.  It was a
wonderful book.  It’s a Newbery Honor Book and I, of course, found
it at the Book Thing..  It’s a fast and easy read but definitely
worth a
couple hours of your time.  (If you’re going to read it, don’t
read the first review on Amazon.com because it essentially gives away
the whole story, particulary parts that need to be discovered as you’re
reading.)

I saw a fabulous children’s book list on another blog the other
day.  It’s extremely long so let me know if you want it and I can
e-mail it to you.  (I copied it and pasted it into Word.)  It
covers everything from Narnia to Tolkien to Anne to the Iliad!

Lies, Lies, Lies…

This is what I tended to get when I confiscated notes from 6th graders (when they were in English that is, rather than Spanish or Arabic):

(all errors original to the note)

J, D said you my girlfriend!!!  This is not troo

BTW, I managed to confiscate the note because B (from Mongolia) asked me how to spell “true”, which had absolutely nothing to do with what we were doing in class.  So I, being the suspicious teacher that I am, came over to investigate!

I don’t like peas but…

…freshly shelled peas purchased from the farmer’s market really are quite good.  And Kristen just bought three pounds (her eyes were bigger than her stomach) so we’ll be eating them for awhile…and we’re freezing some for the winter too!

Shape Note Singing

I think I’ve mentioned before that this winter I started going to a
group that sings Sacred Harp shape note singing.  I just found an NPR article
about it from 2003 that’s a pretty good explanation of it.  The
page also has a place where you can listen to some singing.

P.S. Don’t get used to all this posting! Once I start travelling it will drop off!

What I did yesterday on my first day of summer vacation

1.  Made the first basil pesto of the summer from my porch’s basil.

2.  Cleaned the kitchen (don’t ask how long it took me)

3.  Cleaned my room (again, don’t ask)

4.  Made dinner for Kristen and me, including this wonderful sweet potato soup that I will post a recipe for later.

5.  Got the top third of my left thumbnail painted at a sidewalk
nail salon by a budding 5th grade manicurist – a whole manicure was a
dollar and all I had was a quarter.  So evidently all that got me
was a little bit of metallic blue nail polish.  She chose the
color too.  I am still proudly sporting the look – I know it’s
going to come into fashion soon!

VERY COOL!! YOUR OWN MUSIC STATION!!

Hey everybody!!  If you have high speed Internet, like DSL, then go here:

www.pandora.com

It’s a very cool website that allows you to create your own music
stations based on the kind of artists you want to listen to.  AND
IT’S FREE!!  So
for example, I put in “Alison Krauss” and I’ve been listening to music
by her, Dolly Parton, and other bluegrass artists.  They say they
have over 400,000 songs by 20,000 artists.  You can’t control what
songs you get but it’s a great way to listen to music!!  You don’t
even have to create an account to listen but if you do create an
account, then you can create multiple stations and save them to listen
to later.   It’s super easy to use.  I was listening to
music within a couple minutes of going to the site.

The people who run it sound pretty cool.  They’re doing something called the Music Genome Project and are constantly analyzing thousands of songs to add to it.
