The bridesmaids’ dresses

Kristen and I had a very successful trip to DC last weekend.  We went to the Aria Dress showroom, tried on a bunch of dresses, and chose the color (fuschia with petal sashes), in silk shatung:

Rachel, Kristen, Meggan and Lisa will each get to choose their own style of dress.  I give all the credit for finding this place to Meggan – she was researching maternity bridesmaid dresses when I was home at Christmas and found the company!

Before going home, we had doughnuts at The Fractured Prune (an awesome doughnut shop that Nik introduced me to) and then went to the Paper Source, a fabulous paper store in Georgetown where I will likely get my paper to make our invitations.  That’s the kind of store where I could easily spend $100 and not even know I was doing it.   Nik – consider yourself fairly warned that paper stores are dangerous places for me!

Overbooked!

Our church booked two weddings for 3:00 on June 23rd – ours and one other.  What you might call a HUGE fiasco.  We found out on Monday afternoon.  Basically the other couple didn’t follow the right channels for reserving the church (although it really wasn’t their fault) and then sent their invitations and so initially, the church just told us that we had to change.  This really frustrated me because although I understand that mistakes happen why should we have been the ones to change all of our plans if we’d done the right thing in reserving the church?  But yesterday, the head administrator called me back, acknowledged that the church was in the wrong, told me that our name was in the book first, and that we could have our wedding at the time that we wanted to.

Frankly, just having the church office admit that they made a mistake, apologize for it, and tell me that I could choose made me a lot more willing to change to accommodate this woman’s schedule.  So because of this, we started reconsidering our reception – if we have to get married at noon, then having an outdoor reception in the afternoon of a hot June day doesn’t sound nearly so appealing.  (An outdoor reception at 4:30 in the afternoon is doable – not 1:00.)  And so yesterday morning, one of my co-ESOL teachers offered us her church for the reception.  Nik and I went and looked at it today and we think that it’s perfect.  The room is beautiful (it’s their old sanctuary) and even has a hardwood floor – no need to even rent a dance floor!  In so many ways (parking, bathrooms, air conditioning, kitchen, rentals, and on and on), this place will be much easier and better than our other plan.  (Which was rent a tent and put it up in my co-worker’s backyard.  This also would have been great but just a ton more work, lots more money, and potential problems.)

So all in all, with relatively few tears shed, I think we’ve found a solution that may be superior to what we had in the first place.  None of the details are confirmed yet but I’m confident that they will work out.  The Lord has certainly been faithful to us!

The first snow

It’s snowing today – for the first time all winter.  Bizarre.  Nik and I are hoping for a delay in the morning because we’re also supposed to get some freezing rain tonight.  But I doubt it’s going to happen.  The storm is supposed to be over by early in the morning.  Not so useful for us teachers!!

Things accomplished tonight

1.  Paid most of my bills for the month…
2.  ...including my last car payment EVER!  HIP HIP HOORAY!! (At least for my Camry!)
3.  Bought Mom a plane ticket to come for Mother’s Day weekend and my bridal shower, hosted by Nik’s mom and friends.
4.  Balanced my checkbook.
5.  Archived/replied to lots of e-mails, so that now I have only about 40 e-mails in my inbox instead of 150.  Much better!

NOT accomplished –
1.  The entire bag of grading that I brought home, which allowed me to justify leaving school at 4:00 today.  Oh well.  Life goes on.  (I should know better.  I very rarely ever manage to do work that I bring home on weeknights.  Once I get home, I just lose all motivation to do school work.)

How Mom spends her days

A few weeks ago, my students were doing a unit about writing about habitual activities.  For part of their unit test, they were instructed to write about the daily activities of “Ms. Judge’s mother.”  (I told them they could write fiction – because obviously, they don’t really know what Mom does every day.)

So, in case you were wondering, here is what Mom does every day.

She:

  • calls her daughter
  • goes shopping and comes home with many things
  • usually eats lunch at the mall
  • does exercises and jumps like a monkey.  Then she eats bananas for breakfast.
  • reads the newspaper to know what’s going on in the
    world.
  • is a hard worker.
  • takes cooking and music classes.
  • eats dinner for her stomach
  • is a very busy and active mother
  • makes breakfast for the family and then eats her breakfast
    after everybody else.
  • is a very lovely mother
  • drives her car to the market to buy food.  Next she drives to go home and sleep.  Finally her family goes to the hotel and
    sleeps.  She is very tired.
  • plays computer
  • has breakfast with a cup of tea
  • cleans the bath mat in her clean bathroom and cleans her beautiful bedroom.  After that she takes a nap and wakes up and
cooks her dinner.  Then her lovely son
comes back and eats her big dinner and does his work in his small bedroom.
  • plays basketball in the park with her friends.

My new clothes

In Greece, it’s traditional for the future mother-in-law to take the future daughter-in-law shopping for a new outfit.  So yesterday, Nik’s mom and I went shopping and here is what she bought me!

From Ann Taylor:

And, (after searching in way too many stores), we found a really fun white button-up shirt with pleats all over it at Coldwater Creek.  I couldn’t find a picture of that one so you’ll have to use your imagination.  But all in all, a cute outfit and a fun time with Nik’s mom!

And so it begins

Nik and I had our first pre-marital counseling session with Pastor Stan today.  Today was mostly spent telling our “how we met” story to Pastor Stan so he could get to know us a little bit better.  While our time with him was good, it also just all feels overwhelming.  He gave us the Taylor-Johnson Temperment Analysis to take.  It’s 180 questions that we have to answer for ourselves and each other.  So really 360.  That’s going to take awhile!  We will be meeting with him some more times and then also they will be assigning us a mentor couple from the church.  I’m thankful for that – Nik and I had talked about wanting that but weren’t really sure how to find a couple to connect to.  We just have so much to talk about, plan, and do between now and June 23rd.  (And that’s not to mention be teachers too!)  So anyway, I’m glad that this is a 3-day weekend.  Nik’s car is out of commission and not worth fixing so this weekend we’re on the hunt for a new [to us] car.  Wish us luck!

In honor of the heat wave

(Because it’s now 75 degrees at 11:30 am)

“What dreadful weather hot weather we have!  It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.”

Jane Austen, Letter of September 18, 1796.

“Too hot to go to church?  What about HELL?”

poster seen in Dayton, Ohio

“There might be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.”

Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

(From Real Simple)

And in local news…

It’s currently 70 degrees in Baltimore, at 10:15 in the morning!  Ridiculous!  Especially since the Alaska fam are experiencing some extreme winter! I walked to the Farmer’s Market this morning and tried out my new shoes in the process.  It was a great way to start my morning.

Nik and I are having lunch with his mother today, because it’s her name day.  (Her name is Fotini, which you’ll see listed on January 6th) We’re going to Ikaros, a Greek restaurant just around the corner from Samos, the Greek restaurant that we took Eric, Meggan, and kids to in September.

This morning, I’ve already had a good cry after listening to this NPR story, “The Ground We Lived On: A Father’s Last Days.”  It’s a daughter documenting the last months of her 85-year old father’s life as he is dying of cancer.  You hear his voice a lot, along with hers.  It’s an amazing story – one that Kristen told me about a couple months ago but I just had time to listen to today.  It’s well worth the few minutes spent listening to it!

“Our voices are the ground we’ve lived on, so we keep talking, even about his leaving me,” she says.

(And I think that’s the most links I’ve ever put in one blog entry!)

Success

I bought my wedding dress (from Anderson Bridal in Anchorage)!!  It’s actually a really nice bridesmaid dress that I was able to order in white. I love it and the price was really reasonable too (since it was a bridesmaid dress and not a wedding dress).  And that’s about all I can say about the subject because a certain someone also reads my blog and I can’t be spilling too many secrets.  But I’m happy to send pictures to anyone who asks (who’s also approved to see such pictures!).

But, since it’s sad to not have any pictures, here’s a fun one of Nik, Selah, and I crashed on the couch on Thanksgiving Day.  Nik and I were exhausted from our marathon trip to get to Mom’s and I think Selah was faking sleep!
