HB!

Starting today, for exactly two weeks (until October 9th), Nik is only 4 years younger than me.

Happy Birthday husband!

Polishing highly recommended

We have an extended service plan on my rings, which requires me to take them in every six months to get them inspected.  So while I had them inspect the rings last night (and a good thing too because the stones needed tightening), I also had them clean and polish them.  Wow-eeee!!  My rings looks gorgeous!  Brand-new!  Platinum is amazing!  I can even see my reflection in them.  And good timing too because…

Happy three-month-iversary to us!

Here we come, wedding cake!

Yet another project (does it ever end?!)

The other day, I decided that I didn’t want our driveway to look like it belonged to an abandoned house anymore.  The weeds were growing really high in the cracks.  So I cleared out all the roots and discovered that we have several fault lines, like this, in our driveway.  (Do you think I should report the discovery of new East Coast fault lines to the USGS?)

And now that I’ve exposed them, they have to be filled and sealed so that they don’t get a lot bigger in the winter.  (Oops!)  So we have a bit of a job on our hands over the next couple weeks!  Luckily the forecast is for warm weather for awhile.  I also discovered that the lawn had overgrown the driveway by several inches.  I had fun with the shovel!

Happy New Year!

Thursday was Rosh Hashanah and because Baltimore County observes Jewish holidays, we got the day off! Rather than be productive and accomplish things (who needs to do that?), we went to the beach!  Besides, I’ve gone to Assateague every summer since 2002.  I couldn’t break the tradition!

So we got up Thursday morning, drove across the Bay Bridge (it’s over 4 miles long!),

and arrived at Assateaugue Island (a national seashore and one of my favorite places to go in Maryland).   (BTW, in Maryland, us West Coasters have to be careful not to make the mistake of saying that we’re going to “the coast.”  Here, we either say, “the beach” or “the shore” or if you’re really from Baltimore, you’ll say, “We’re going down the oh-shun.”  )

I had fun wearing Granny’s sunglasses on the beach!  I think Nik prefers me to wear other, less alien-like sunglasses in public (and I would agree!).  But for the beach, they worked well for cutting down the glare and I just liked wearing them!  That’s also my beach hat that we bought on St. John, while on our honeymoon!

Nik and I enjoyed swimming, lying in the sun, taking a walk, and reading.  All in all, it was a wonderful day.  And well worth the six hours of driving for the five hours on the beach!

Dessert

EDIT:  I added the link to my blog where I gave grilled pizza instructions!

Tina (Nik’s mom) came over for dinner tonight and we made grilled pizza again.  It was so good!  This time, I rolled out the dough with a rolling pin which worked much better than trying to do it with our hands.  I was able to get it fairly thin and the crust came out really crispy.  Nik and I could eat it all the time!  We just watched a Cook’s Illustrated video online about making grilled pizza and they suggested making a spicy oil with olive oil, garlic and red pepper flakes as the sauce.  Their way of making the pizza is more complicated than ours (we like our toppings better) but I want to try their crust next time.  We have just been buying pizza dough from the local pizza place up the street.  It’s two dollars for enough crust for four grilled pizzas and the dough is really good.  So the ease of that may be hard to pass up (sort of like the frozen pie crust Zona!).

And for dessert, it was the encore edition of a dessert that I made for my friends on Saturday night:  mango sorbet, frozen raspberries from the Labor Day picking expedition, mini mint Milanos, and mint from our front porch.  Beautiful, if I do say so myself!

We’ve been busy

1.  We had to go back to work.  Poor us.  Actually, the first week of school was relatively easy for me.  I only have two classes to prep for this year, instead of 3 and my workload is noticeably easier.  Also, our student numbers are very low this year so I have a couple small classes – even one that is only 4 students!  I am again exceedingly thankful for the air conditioning in my room and my students love it too!

2.  Why you should never plant ivy!!  Here it is, growing back again.  I worked on it a bit more last night and cleared about half the wall, AGAIN.  We’re going to try to keep a closer watch on it this time and spray it with some kind of chemical when the new leaves grow.  (Sorry Eric.  It’s supposed to be the only way to keep it from growing back, short of removing every little root.  And we can’t do that in the wall.)

3.  Picking raspberries.  Nik went to the beach to hang out with his friends from Sunday morning until Monday afternoon.  It was our first time being apart for a night!   But we survived!  I had a great time seeing a couple of my friends, including Kristen.  We went raspberry picking on Monday morning.  Fresh raspberries are SO heavenly!  And now I have about 3 pounds of raspberries in my freezer, just waiting to give a taste of summer to the winter’s baking projects.

4.  Gluing mirrors.   One morning, about a week before we left for Alaska, we were sitting on our porch eating breakfast and we noticed that my driver’s side rear-view mirror had been smashed.  No other in the vicinity was hurt so I guess some kid, in a fit of rage, decided to take a bat to my mirror.  Very frustrating.  Because the break was clean (thankfully), we decided to try to fix it ourselves, rather than take it to a body shop and spend hundreds of dollars.  So, we went to Crazy Ray’s junkyard to try to find a mirror.  It was about 100 degrees and not the most fun 1/2 hour we ever spent.  After a few unlucky guesses (hint – the mirror on the 94 Camry is different), we found the exact same mirror for only $14.  Eat your heart out body shops!

5.  Getting ripped off.  My car sat for about a month while we were in AK and also figuring out how to fix the mirror.  In that time, my very old battery decided to die.  Once we jumped it with Nik’s Jeep and drove it to AutoZone to get a new battery, my airbag light wouldn’t go off.  My mechanic said I had to take it to a dealer.  Jerry’s Toyota charged me $92 (92!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to tell me that the code was for no voltage and that they fixed it.  I bet it took them about 10 minutes to hook it up, read the code, and fix it.  I still feel a bit outraged at the injustice of it all!

6.  Breaking the law.  We were pretty sure that we knew our neighbors’ names but weren’t positive.  So we hatched this plan where we were going to steal their mail (a federal offense) next time they went on vacation, verify their name, and then give it back.  Instead, yesterday, the mail man delivered their mail to us!  No theft necessary!  So now we know – Tim and Brenda!

7.  Gardening.  This cucumber went to Tina, Nik’s mom and we ate one last night.  The ants got the rest but hey, they were the first cucumbers I ever grew!  And the extent of our garden for this year (besides basil on the front porch for pesto and a few tomatoes).

Happy 2-month-iversary to us!

We love it when our month-iversary comes around because we get to eat Mom’s cake!!  It’s sooooooooo good and we have about 5 more pieces in our freezer!  So that’s five more months of bliss!  And, the pieces are so big, we get to celebrate on the 24th too!

What I’m wearing to school today…

…jeans, Danskos, and a rain coat.  It’s 65 and raining.  Weird.  I guess we brought Alaska back to Baltimore with us!  (Never fear – it’s supposed to be 93 by Thursday!)

EDIT:  And a shirt too of course!

We’re back (and some pictures)

Hey all!  We’re home from Alaska.  Nik has put some of our pictures on Flikr.  And I know that this isn’t from Alaska, but here’s a picture from Tim and Kate’s wedding, the last wedding of the four (including our own) that we had to go to this summer.  They were married on August 4th – Papa and Granny’s anniversary!

(Some of you may recognize Ryan and Heather.  Ryan was one of our ushers.  They are also the couple of the Long Island Wedding.) Thanks to Dan Gerding for the picture!

More of our own wedding pictures to come!
