My first sewing project of the summer
I made this on Monday. I was using a book that Tina lent me called, “Quilt in a Minute” (or something like that) – it has lots of fun, beginner quilting projects. I had also bought a fat quarter pack of fabric with some beautiful fabric that I was glad to use. This was supposed to take an hour – it took me more like 2 1/2 hours but if I hadn’t fiddled around with the fabric placement for forever, it would have been much faster! I also made a lot of newbie quilter mistakes but I amazingly learned a lot with just this little kitchen towel project. I think I should probably try more of these small projects before I attempt the king-sized quilt for our bed!
At some point in the fiddling:

The final, fun, finished product – isn’t the rickrack cute?!?! (And my first quasi-quilting project ever!)

The summer of sewing, here we come!

Job update
The short version?
It’s all a big mess.
The long version?
I’ve been assigned to an elementary school that is 2.5 miles from our house. Ideal, right? But the two principals are debating how best to arrange my schedule, and basically coming up with one that is not workable for me. Technically it’s workable, but not what Nik and I are willing to have me do.
So please pray. Right now, ideally, I would either get to work every other day at each school as originally planned or I would be released from the middle school to just work elementary, maybe at two schools, maybe part-time.
You know how I like to be in control and have everything just right? Well, I’m not right now, nothing seems right, and it’s not fun. And so I’m learning that really, in the end, God’s in control. Not me.
I love white vinegar
Cook with it.
Clean with it.
Disinfect with it.
Make tarragon vinegar with it.
The list goes on and on.
(Just make sure to read the ingredient list to verify that it’s made from grain, not petroleum.)
Homemade Hamburger Buns
Nik and I enjoyed hamburgers at the beginning of this week with meat from Woolsely Farm, which I bought at the farmer’s market. We have eaten very little beef in the past year (since we bought our lamb), and so it was a nice treat. This was also the second time that I made the homemade hamburger bun recipe from Coconut and Lime. In her blog posting with the recipe, Rachel writes, “Why go through the trouble of making delicious sandwiches and burgers when you don’t have a great bun to serve them on?” And now that we’ve made these rolls, we totally agree!! They are so good and really easy to make. We will probably never buy store-bought rolls again. (Unless I get desperate – or for example, our job is to provide 4 dozen hamburger buns for hungry math teachers. That’s another story.)
The only change that I made to the recipe was to use half whole-wheat/half white flour. And I forgot to do the egg wash on the top with the sesame seeds. Nik was sad about that because it really is good. But oh well – we’ll be sure to do it next time! (ETA: in the recipe, you’ll see that she calls for 1/4 oz of yeast – that is 1 and 1/2 teaspoons)
This post is my entry in the Coconut and Lime 5th Blogiversary Contest.

Partially Employed
Thanks for your prayers everyone. My interview on Monday at the middle school went really well and Tuesday morning, they offered me the job.
I only have to go there on B days so that means I’ll be there two days one week and three days the next. Now we’re praying that the ESOL office will place me at a elementary office close by for the remaining half of my position. I’ve specifically requested to be placed at my neighborhood school and walking to work would certainly be ideal! But, in the meantime, we’re just praying that the Lord will put me in the right place.
And last night, to celebrate my new half-job, we went out to eat…at Subway. Long story but basically the place we chose to go didn’t work out, we were already really hungry, didn’t know where to go and ended up with Subway. Definitely not local and sustainable but at least not fried. We’ll do better some other time!
P.S. Yoo hoo! Baby Judge! We want to meet you! Come out and play!!
Happy Birthday Katie!
Happy Birthday Katie!!
We hope you have a fabulous day!

Prayers
Hello my dear family and friends. I ask your prayers today and this week for two things.
1. I have two interviews this week: one, on Monday, at a middle school for a half-time position. It’s a nice school (and middle school, which I love!) but is, very unfortunately, a long drive away. I would then have to find a elementary position (half-time) to make a full time position. The other one, on Wednesday, is at Nik’s high school (about 2 miles from us) for a full time position. It may seem obvious that I should just take the high school position (Nik and I could even commute the whole five minutes together!) but it’s not so easy. Just pray that the Lord will make his will very clear to us as to what position I should take.
2. My friend has a good friend from Afghanistan who is studying in America but whose family is still back in her country. Today, just before I left church, I found out that this friend’s sister was shot and killed last weekend and that her father was shot and severely wounded. Please pray for their family, for the nation of Afghanistan, and for peace.
Happy Anniversary!
Happy 5th Anniversary Jon and Leah!
I realize that we were supposed to get you a present made of wood, but instead, we arranged for a slightly more lively present to be arriving any day now!
May the Lord richly bless you both as you embark on this new stage in life!
We love you!
(And isn’t that a romantic picture, by the way? With the lovely couple and their most favoritest older sister on the husband’s side?!)
