For all you teachers out there

A quite irreverent but also quite humorous take on the Sermon on the Mount.

(Nik got this in one of his grad classes and luckily for me, I found it on the internet so I didn’t have to type it out myself.)

January/February Sewing Goals

I decided to move the sewing goals to their own post so I could keep them updated too.  I’ve also added a few more.

1.  This mei tai for Rachel, Grace, and Drew too!

2. Make a mock dining room curtain out of free fabric that I don’t care about (of which I have plenty) to test the design and make the pattern before I cut into the expensive beautiful fabric that we’ve had for over a year.

3. Sew the buttons on the living room cushions.

4. Take apart the travel pillow that Kristen made for me a long time ago, quilt over it to save it from falling apart, and put it back together again.
5. A birthday present for a young lady I know, whose mother reads my blog and consequently I can’t say anything more about it.
6. Make the actual dining room curtains.

P.S. Let me go on record to say that I am on a fabric buying moratorium.  I have so much fabric that I’ve run out of good places to put it.  So I just need to start sewing with it.  So from now on until I’ve made a very good sized dent in my “stash” (and this will probably take months if not at least a year), I’m not allowed to buy any fabric other than what minimal solids I might have to buy in order to finish up a project.  And even then, I’m going to try not to buy anything.  But definitely no more buying fabric because it’s cute and irresistible!

Looking Forward…

…to some goals for January

I’ve decided that this month, I want to have my activities focused toward a theme of “Organization.”  (February’s theme is going to be “finances.”)  I made a list of all the things that I wanted to organize while at school on Monday.  And then I forgot it there.  Ironic, isn’t it?

So, I’m going to post the list here, and every Wednesday in January, I’m going to update the list to let you all know my progress and keep myself accountable for getting at least some of this done.  Nik is going to be working on some of this too – so it’s not just me who’s going to accomplish this by any means!

January – “Organize”
1. My desk – Sort, file, and deal with all the papers that built up during December when all I was doing was sewing.
2. Nik’s desk – ditto (except for the sewing part)
3. Clear off the couch in our office – sort and put away all items.
4. Ditto for the floor of the office.
5. Make a master harvest schedule (i.e. what we have to harvest/can/freeze and when throughout the whole year)
6. Make a Master Recipe List – by season.
7. Sewing Room:  fabric, notions, card/paper supplies
8. Basement – Canning shelves, boxes, rearrange storage
9.  Make a seed order.
10. Catch all desk drawer in office.
11. Organize the recipes on my computer to match my recipe binder system.
12.  The pictures/papers on the refrigerator

That’s it.  Think I have a chance of accomplishing all of that?  Even thinking about attempting the basement is a bit ambitious but I think I can get the rest done.

Looking Back…

…to Christmas 2009All the big grandkids wearing their hand-knitted hats from their YiaYia (Nik’s mom, Tina)

The only picture that we managed to get of me holding my newest niece, Grace!  (I’m in my pajamas and Grace is in the same outfit that Jonas wore at Christmas when he was 6 days old!)  Aren’t her cheeks adorable!?!

A constant source of amusement to us on our trip, the crazy kitty, Cinder (or his tail that is)

A walk in the snow (and some playground snow surfing)

Finished and Ready to Go!

Don’t ask me how I expected to get all of this done without 4 days of being snowed in at home (including one snow day from church/holiday celebrating and 2 from school) but…

I’m finished sewing!!

We’ve started packing and we’re getting ready to leave our house at 5:15 tomorrow morning to drive to DC and fly to Alaska.

So to our Alaskan family – see you very soon!

To every one else out there in my blog readership:

Merry Christmas!

Vacation a little bit early!

A great day so far!

1.  Slept in (until 8:30, which is super late for me).
2. Made pumpkin muffins (from the Simply in Season Nutty Pumpkin Bread recipe – I always double the spices).  I used Alaska cranberries that Meggan, in her overwhelming generosity sent to us.  My mouth feels at home when I eat them!
3. Are in the middle of a huge snowstorm/blizzard.  It started last night around 10:45, by this morning we already had around 4 inches, and the forecast is calling for up to 2 feet.  Here’s hoping for a snow day on Monday!
