Not wanting to make any family members jealous…

Here are some pictures that aren’t of Ezra!

Jonas was very brave and gentle, holding big bugs at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (and note the Greek kid in the background!):

We were supposed to look serious.  One of us succeeded:

Same story, second verse…

The fam (and the only picture we took of Eric!):

Noah becoming a true Marylander by eating a soft shell crab.  (Jonas ate half of it actually so they’re both true Marylanders).  We tried to scare him out of it by making sure he knew what he was eating (shell, lungs, guts, and all) but he persevered, brave boy!

And, lest you think Nik wasn’t around, here’s the only picture we managed to take of him (at least on our camera).  Selah was having fun with our camera that day!

Slightly over prepared? (June 2010)

Towards the end of June, I needed a no-thought sewing project.  So I used my flannel scraps and made 51 cloth diaper wipes.  Some of you may recognize some of the flannels!  I think I probably have enough to go with whatever cloth diapers we end up buying!

I found some terry cloth in the remants at Joann’s the other day so I might make a few more with terry cloth on one side and flannel on the other.  I’m told that sometimes extra “scraping” power comes in handy!

Cloth Napkins (July 2010)

I managed to get 24 napkins made.

12 using this method (with a straight stitch rather than zig zag), which turned out beautifully but took forever and 12 using a simple “sew two pieces of fabric together, turn right side out and top-stitch” method, not quite as elegant but much faster.  I’m pleased with both!  And it was so fun to have enough cloth napkins to use at Eric and Meggan’s open house on Saturday night.  We’ve basically arrived at our quest to be able to host parties using nothing that’s disposable.

I might make a few more using this method but probably will use purchased binding rather than making my own.  It’s really cute to make your own but so much work!

Getting to Know You

We had such a wonderful time with Eric and Meggan and the kids when they were here last week.  Such a wonderful time that it took me four days of long naps and early bedtimes to recover!  It was great to be with Noah, Selah, and Jonas – especially great because I felt like they knew us and we knew them and so we could just carry on from where we left off at Christmas.

But Ezra?  He was a different story.  He pretty much didn’t give me the time of day when we visited at Christmas.  I was an unknow person to him and he had better things to do.  But what a different little person he is now, after just 7 months of growing up!  I had so much fun getting to know him and the quirks of his personality.  For one thing, he called me “Auntie Laura” very clearly which of course endeared me to him – “He knows who I am!”  And he is so much fun to be around.

Here are a few pictorial examples of what I learned about Ezra.

His desire to always have his own of whatever it was we were having, like the world’s largest slice of pizza. (He did let me help him finish it.):

His love of fun:

His desire to be helpful (and his love of folding) as evidenced by his determination to keep the fabric arm covers of our couches folded at all times:

And here’s something else that I learned about Ezra (or maybe about 3 year olds in general?):

They love to ask questions and are no respecters of privacy.  On Sunday, he followed me around through the house as I got a thread and needle, went into the bedroom to take off my dress to do a quick sewing fix before the shower, went into the bathroom (he came too!), all the while asking me lots and lots of questions about lots and lots of things.  He kept me on my toes.

And now, I have fallen in love with another nephew.

They’re gone…

and it’s awfully quiet…

and I’m a little lonely.

Jonas started out “eating” his new cousin a lot but by this morning, he was “eating” Uncle Nik and kissing his new cousin.

Progress, I’d say!

They’re here!

Eric and Meggan, Noah, Selah, Jonas, and Ezra arrived on Friday night!  We picked them up at the airport in DC in our friends’ massive Ford Excursion.  I felt like I was back in the Judge family Suburban days!  When we got to our house, and opened the car doors, the kids immediately said, “What’s all that noise?”  There are no crickets and cicadas in Alaska and their summer “night” is quiet!  Not so in Baltimore!  Ezra asked me, “What are the bugs sayin’?” I told him they were saying, “Welcome to our house, Ezra!”

Saturday we hosted an open house for their friends and family from the area and yesterday Tina and Nikki hosted an amazing baby shower for me (more on that later).  So today, everyone is sleeping in and finally letting themselves recover from jet lag.

Yesterday morning, after church, we went down to the Downtown Farmers’ Market for a little Baltimore fun.  We did buy some tomatoes and olive oil, but most importantly, we bought hot mini-doughnuts (like from the beach) and kettle corn.  Nothing like a good sugar jolt at 11:00 am!

Here’s a picture of the super-tall and grown-up Selah and me, which accomplishes two purposes – one, proof they’re actually here and two, finally a picture of how big my belly is getting! (And for any Sleepless in Seattle fans, this picture is taken in front of the Baltimore Sun building where Meg Ryan’s character worked and the building that you see her walking out of in the movie.)

Prophecy?

For three years in a row, I had my students answer this prompt as part of a test at the end of a past tense unit:

Write a paragraph telling  the story of how you think Mrs. B and Mr. B met.

I just came across this story that one of my students wrote in response to this prompt a couple years ago (this is faithfully reproduced, punctuation and all!):

When the Mrs. B came to the Baltimore.  And Mr. B saw the Mrs. B and Mr. B was surprise.  And Mr. B said, “O my goodness” “how she is beautiful!” And Mr. B and Mrs. B talk with each other.  And Mr. B send his mother to talked with Mrs. B family.  And the Mr. B mother talked with Mrs. B mother.  They said “yes”.  And Mr. B and Mrs. B married.  They lived very well.  After 2 years Mrs. B has a baby “but they don’t tell to their family.”  When their baby was in 5 years old they told to their family.  Their family surprise.  And they lived better than before because they have a baby.

I love the last sentence the best.

My students were so excited to find out that we were having a baby.  I think many other cultures hold children in higher regard (or as more highly desired) than in ours.  I certainly was asked many times, as soon as we got married, “Do you want a baby miss? When are you going to have a baby miss?”  (It was as if “Marriage = children” in their minds.)  It was my joy to be able to answer those questions in the affirmative this spring!

More Thinking

A compelling argument here for “Breastfeeding as Worship.”  More things for me to think on as this little baby inside of me insists on making himself/herself known by moving all the time!

That’s about all the sewing anyone can take for one day!

(And you thought this was going to be a blog about a baby, didn’t you?)

I think I’m caught up.  I might have missed a little project here or there but basically, I’ve chronicled the last 6 months of my sewing life, both in the past few posts on the blog and here, on this page, my official “Craft Project Roll”.

I’d also like to point out that I sewed all those projects that I just documented from my “stash” – meaning that I probably have way too much fabric.  It’s a fun challenge to use what I have, though!

And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

(I promise to put some pictures of my rapidly expanding belly soon!)

The buttons (January 2010)

I made the living room cushions last summer and fall but it took me until January to sew on the buttons.  Details are tricky little things.
