He Drinks! From A Cup!

Mark is accumulating new skills right and left.  Here he is drinking from a cup, all by himself!  We don’t trust him to have it on his tray by himself yet but he definitely understands how to use it!

You’ll get the idea in the first few seconds but watch until the end if you want a little “Ellie drinks from a cup” action also! 🙂

Finish It Up Friday – Update #3 – Snoozer Lives Again!

I just finished one thing this week – Nik’s T-shirt quilt!  I need a helper around to take pictures of the whole thing so I’ll post them in a separate post.  But here’s proof of the finished applique!

002 (800x533)“Snoozer” and “1520” used to be iron-on letters.  Then they disintegrated in the wash the first time I washed the quilt.  So I picked off all the old pieces, traced new ones, cut them out of felt and appliqued them on.  This whole process only took me nine months.

I’m linking up with “Finish It Up Friday” at Crazy Mom Quilts.

The [Still Just As Long Because I Added Another Project Again] List of WIPs
(as of 1/24/14)

  1. fix the living room shades (annoyingly falling apart)
  2. Ellie’s doll hair (it’s been over a year and Ellie’s not bald anymore so I really can’t justify her doll’s baldness anymore.)
  3. put the last button and buttonhole on Ellie’s dress (I think I figured out how to do it on my machine.)
  4. Mark’s birthday quilt
  5. dining room shades (they’re so close to being done and have just been sitting for close to 18 months)
  6. pillow for Ellie (not technically a WIP because I haven’t started it but it’s been on the “to sew” list for months)
  7. fix Mark’s pants (the crotch tore out)
  8. fix the bathroom curtain
  9. hem new corduroy pants
  10. hem jeans

I’m Stocked Up On Peanut Butter and Arborio Rice. How Are You Doing?

We made a mad dash for Trader Joe’s this morning to stock up on peanut butter because who wants to be house bound if you’re out of peanut butter?  We also bought arborio rice because what if I want to make risotto (which we are currently addicted to)?

Have fun riding out the storm, East Coasters!

Finish It Up Friday – Update #2

I did all the fast, easy projects last week so I don’t have many to cross off the list this week.  But I am making progress on finishing up Nik’s quilt.  I also fixed the office shades (a couple of the pull strings had come undone).  I am also almost done with Mark’s quilt top so I made good progress on that this week.  Thanks for helping keep me motivated to get these projects done!

Finish It Up Friday – Update #1

It’s definitely a good thing that I decided to publicize my intention to finish my WIP’s! 🙂  This week, I got a bit more work done on Mark’s quilt (although I still need two more blue prints so I’m at a bit of standstill).  More importantly, I fixed Mark’s rabbit, finished Ellie’s bird, fixed my tank top, and sewed up the hole in the thumb of our glove hot pad!  Hooray!  That’s four projects off the list!

I’m linking up with “Finish It Up Friday” at Crazy Mom Quilts.

The [Not-So-Shameful Anymore] List of WIPs (as of 1/10/14)

  1. fix the living room shades (annoyingly falling apart)
  2. fix the office shades (also falling apart)
  3. Ellie’s doll hair (it’s been over a year and Ellie’s not bald anymore so I really can’t justify her doll’s baldness anymore.)
  4. put the last button and buttonhole on Ellie’s dress (I think I figured out how to do it on my machine.)

Mark Discovers Whipped Cream and Presents!

We had so much fun celebrating Mark’s first birthday last weekend.  We made and ate lots of amazingly delicious pizza.

033 (800x533) 041 (800x534)“Where has this delicious food been my whole life?”

Stealing a great idea from my sister, Mark’s first birthday “cake” was actually just a pile of just barely sweetened whipped cream.  The rest of us ate the best gingerbread I’ve ever had (with the rest of the whipped cream).

058 (800x533)069 (800x533) 071 (800x533)“What is this weird stuff on my fingers?”

078 (800x533)saying “ooh” with Mama but still not putting anything in his mouth

He never really did dive in and eat it but with a little help from me, he got a few tastes!

090 (800x533) 098 (800x534)Then, we had the fun of opening presents!  Who doesn’t love that?! 🙂

119 (533x800) 121 (800x533)

Happy Birthday Mark!  We love you!

Seeking Recommendations: Your Favorite “Classic” Books

Hi everyone!  I’m planning to join in on the “Classics Club“, which is a challenge to read 50 classic books in 5 years.  I’m planning to read one a month so I’ll actually finish in just a little over 4 years.  To start, I need to come up with my list of 50 books to read.

I’m planning to reread some of Jane Austen’s books because I’m also [sort-of, not really] participating in the “Motherhood and Jane Austen” online book club.  So that’s six books for my first year but I need ideas for more!  I’m thinking of reading some of the older Newbery Award winners and some Charles Dickens (any favorites to recommend?).  I’ve never read To Kill a Mockingbird (*gasp, I know), I don’t remember Jane Eyre and I know there are more holes in my knowledge/education.  I’m also open to non-fiction recommendations, which you would consider to be classic, important knowledge builders.

So…what recommendations can you share with me for must-read classic books?  I’ll post my complete list in the next couple weeks!  I’ll also be blogging each book as I finish reading it so perhaps some of you might like to read along with me?

(For inspiration, here’s the club’s “Big Book List“.  And their definition of “classic” is simply something published more than 25 years ago.)

I Finally Feel Totally At Home In Baltimore (it only took a polar vortex)

This morning, when we woke up to single digit temperatures (something like -9 with wind chill), we opened our bedroom blinds and saw…

ice on the windows!!!

125 (800x533)

I’m home! Hooray! Life is finally normal!

127 (800x533)I know, a pitiful accumulation of ice that’s now long gone, any true Alaskan would sneeze at it, but I haven’t seen it in a long time! 🙂

We did have an appointment to go to this morning but other than that, we’ve been holed up inside all day.  Because even though if I still lived in Glennallen, today would feel like a heat wave, I’m currently a soft, wimpy East Coast dweller and…baby, it’s cold outside!
