Katie Kissed Me
by Christine Lynn Mahoney

Katie kissed me! Yuck, it’s true!
My face took on a greenish hue!
My knees, like jelly, stared shaking!
Then my stomach started quaking!
Slobber slithered down my cheek!
My consciousness was growing weak!
My ears were ringing, my head was spinning!
But, all the while Kate was grinning!
My heart was pounding through my shirt!
My tongue felt like I just ate dirt!
Though you may think I’ve lost my brain!
I wish she’d kiss me once again!

Jonas is a funny boy!

I was wasting a little time the other day, trying to get a high vocabulary score on FreeRice when this word came up:HOOEY

The meaning?
Nonsense

“I like to hooey hooey!”

An interesting quote that I heard somewhere

You can’t solve a problem in the framework that created it.  So reframe your imagination.

Interesting to ponder.

I survived

Thank you for your prayers everyone.  Today, my interview went well.  It ended up being a group interview with all 3 ESOL teachers at the school and the principal.  It was pretty casual and often more of a discussion than a grilling of me.  So I was thankful for that.  The principal said that she would be contacting me within the next couple of days and it looks like I may have a job very soon.  So I’m grateful for that!

On another note, I’ll be sharing more pictures from my New York trip as I get around to shrinking them and putting them on here.  So here’s one – the famous Andy Warhol soup cans!

And, appropriately because of where my hotel was, an up close shot of one of the cans:

I had just a little over 1/2 hour in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) on Saturday morning.  So I blitzed through it, saw a few great paintings, and some ridiculous ones.  So be on the lookout for a future series, entitled, “I should have become an artist because my 3-year old nephew could have done that!”  (And speaking of art, when I was talking to Meggan today, she was clearning up the marker that Jonas had so kindly put all over the floor and couch.  Maybe she should have left the marker there and sold the house as an exhibit.  Tbey could have made tons of money!)

Interview today

Hi all.  I’d appreciate your prayers for me today.  My interview at HMS is at 3:15 pm.  Please pray that I would be able to answer their questions well and that if it’s the Lord’s will, the principal will make the decision to hire me.  I am a little bit nervous.  I had to redo my resume yesterday – it still had my original Baltimore address and my old name!  I’ll let you know how it goes when I get home after school.

And for Meggan, here’s a few more art photos…

Organ recital anyone?

For Selah and Addie (and maybe Jonas too, since he was wearing that tutu?!)

Artichokes anyone?

When you go to bed at midnight two nights in a row…

Then get up at 6:15, then walk for miles and miles, your body will eventually start to complain! (Believe me, I can guarantee it!)

So far, I have been successful in my mission to completely tire myself out and have a great time doing it.  So here’s a few more pictures from my trip so far:

The Hairspray Theater (note the rather large can of hairspray!)

My lunch from today – a very yummy gyro/chicken with rice concoction, along with a free sample of haggis.  I never tried haggis when I was in Scotland so I figured I should take advantage of the offer.  It’s Scotland Week in NYC for some reason.  It was pretty gross.  So I would advise you pass up any free offers of haggis that you may come across.

Then I went on an hour’s walk through the Garment District.  And yes, I did get sucked into buying 4 yards of linen fabric that I don’t really have any use for.  But it was only $2 per yard and it’s linen.  So anyone want some?  I also went into some incredible ribbon and trimming stores.

Here are the fabrics that I’ve bought so far.  The white on the left is for our bedroom. Don’t ask me what the linen is for – I don’t know, OK? 🙂

New York is a really BIG city!

My trip to NYC so far has been a big whirlwind!  I had a fabulous day yesterday – I didn’t
get back to my room until 6:45 and then at 7:30, I left to go see Hairspray, a
Broadway show which is sort of ironically about Baltimore!  It was fabulous!  Today has been a crazy round of waiting in line, jockeying for position in crowded conference rooms, and learning a lot.  Right now I’m taking a break and then at 6:00, I’m going to one last workshop about using Shel Silverstein’s poetry in teaching.  Should be pretty
interesting!  Tonight, we’re going to a free dinner sponsored by one of the major ESOL textbook publishers.

Here’s a few pictures so far of my trip – I’ll post more once I get home and have
easier Internet access.  I took 103 yesterday!
Somewhere on Madison Street! 🙂

Some art I loved at the Met:

(Yes, of course, I looked at the Greek sculptures too!)

Here I am in Times Square!

And here’s the famous “World’s Largest Button” in the Fashion District:

The fabric stores were overwhelming in their color and abundance:

I actually bought 8 yards of Italian gauze here – the lady gave me a good deal and tried to talk me into 10 yards!  It’s for our bedroom curtains, and perfect!

And finally, because it is Poetry Thursday, here’s a Shel Silverstein poem that I memorize in 4th grade:

The Homework Machine
The homework machine, oh the homework machine
the most perfect contraption that’s ever been seen.
Just put in your homework
drop in a dime
snap on the switch
and in 10 seconds time
your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be
Here it is: 9 plus 4
and the answer is…3?  THREE?
Oh me.
I guess it’s not as perfect as I thought it would be.

And now I’m off to my Shel workshop!
More tomorrow!

Off to New York

Tomorrow morning, I’m taking the train to New York City for a 2-day convention of ESOL teachers.  I am really excited about it!  The county is paying for a few of us to go.  We are staying in the Hilton New York, just a very few blocks from Central Park and very close to Times Square too.  So I’m going to go see a show tomorrow night and also hang out at the Met for a few hours.  On Saturday, I’m hoping to go to the garment district and check out the block of stores that only sell buttons!

And in between, hopefully I’ll learn more about being a better ESOL teacher!

I’m going to take the laptop with me so hopefully, I’ll have time post a few pictures from my trip.  Wish me luck, braving this huge city!
