November Sewing: Gardening Apron for Tina

I realize that a gardening apron isn’t such a useful present in December but there’s always next summer, right?

Happy Birthday Tina/Mom/Yiayia!  We love you!

Grand European Tour, 2012: Windsor (Stop #3)

On our flight back from Greece, we had a really long layover in England – most of a day.  Jon and Leah were able to take the day off and meet us at the airport, which was lovely.  So Jon dropped off Leah and the girls at a coffee shop in Windsor, picked up the three of us at the airport, drove us back to Windsor, and we all spent the day together.

The main attraction of Windsor is Windsor Castle.  We admired the castle from the outside, not having enough time to justify the expense of buying tickets for everyone to go in.

Jon and Leah packed a lovely lunch for us so we walked up the Long Walk in order to also have a lovely view while we ate it.

Kaitlyn and Ellie enjoyed spending some fun hours together as cousins.  It’s too bad we don’t live closer to each other so this could happen more often!

IMG_3417 (800x600)IMG_3419 (800x519)

After lunch,we kept on walking until we’d walked far enough to get a wide view of the whole castle.  It’s quite impressive!

IMG_3424 (800x600)IMG_3426 (800x600)

After lunch and exploring we headed back into town.  This was as close as we got to the inside of the castle.  I had the fun of going inside and exploring the castle when I traveled in England in 1999 but we just didn’t have enough time to go in this time.  Maybe next time!

IMG_3430 (800x600)After eating dinner together, Jon repeated the whole shuttle process in reverse (leaving Leah and the girls at a coffee shop, taking us to the airport, then going back to get them).

We were so glad to get to spend a few more hours with Jon, Leah, Kaitlyn, and Maria before heading off for the last leg of our trip.  We checked in and eagerly anticipated boarding our next plane because…

we were off to Iceland!

December Sewing: Finished the Tree Skirt, Just In Time!

I managed to finish the tree skirt, just in time to put it under our tree on Sunday!  If we ever actually put more than lights on the tree, I’ll give you an “in-action” shot too!

The first picture is technically the front although it’s really reversible – depending on my color theme mood for the year (bright red/green vs. more muted reds/greens).

December Sewing – A Little Something for Nik

I suppose it’s about time I sewed something for Nik, right? This was a fun and fast project for him – a sunglasses case (similar to the one I made for myself).  This was unintentional but I like how the quilting came out looking like pinstripes!

So here you have it – a dress suit sunglasses case! 🙂

November Sewing: Something for Ellie, Something for B2

Wanting both B2 and Ellie to have something new of their own once he/she is born, I made a little cooking apron for Ellie (using this tutorial) and a new baby blanket for B2.  I’ve been meaning to make Ellie an apron for a long time and now she’ll finally have one!

Ellie LOVED eating cherries this summer so they’re a fun accent for her apron.

We have several lovely blankets that were made for us before Ellie was born.  We’ll continue to use them for B2 but I wanted to have one that was specifically for B2 (particularly if Ellie is upset by another baby using her blankets in the beginning).

Plus, I love these owls!

Grand European Tour, 2012: Greece (Stop #2)

This past summer, after spending a week in England with my brother and his family, we flew to Greece to spend two weeks with Nik’s family.  Unfortunately, we lost most of the pictures that we took in Greece.  Thankfully we still have a few and because we didn’t do much traditional sightseeing, the pictures we do have are a pretty good representation of our trip.  If you want to see a full set of amazing pictures of Greece, check out my (12-part!) blog series about our 2008 Greece vacation.

We started our trip in Athens with Nik’s father’s family. It was really hot so rather than going to the Acropolis or any other archeological sites, we mostly stayed inside in the air conditioning during the day and ventured out in the evening.

One night we drove high into the hills above Athens.nikolas -boyreka m -kastri 7-8-9-2012 004 (800x600)

Another night, we drove south of Athens and went swimming in the sea.IMG_3330 - Copy (800x565)

After a few days in Athens, we drove north (about a 9-hour drive, with a baby involved) to Nea Kallikratia, the beach town where Nik’s mom grew up and where his relatives still live.  Yiayia was there on vacation also, so we had the fun of getting to be there with her as well as Nik’s uncle, aunt, and cousins.  We spent a lot of time at the beach!

Nik and I were really spoiled because Yiayia was there to play with Ellie.  So that meant that every day we were able to go snorkeling together, rather than taking turns.  We met a man from Serbia who was an amazing diver (putting our little snorkeling adventures to shame).  He and his wife both spoke English so we had fun getting to know them and having a friend to go snorkeling with! This was also the trip where we discovered Ellie’s talent for rapping.

One day, we drove to the peninsula of Kassandra and spent the day in Loutra.  Loutra has amazingly huge rocks in the bay. This meant that Nik and I got to do some really cool snorkeling while Ellie and Yiayia played.

Then we all took a nap on the beach.  IMG_3368 (800x600) IMG_3370 (800x600)

While in Kallikratia, we also got to see Nik’s uncle (his father’s youngest brother), aunt and cousins. It was great to see them too!

On our drive back to Athens, we stopped at the ancient archeological site of Dion, so that Ellie could at least begin to understand some of the amazing richness of her Greek ancestry.  We only scratched the surface of this site and I would love to go back.  My favorite part was walking on the ancient Roman road, with its original paving tiles.IMG_3385 (800x600) IMG_3387 (800x600)We also drove part way up Mt. Olympus before finishing our long drive back to Athens.

IMG_3395 (800x600)

Back in Athens, Nik’s dad had arrived for his summer vacation and so we had the fun of getting to be with him too.  Ellie loved having three Pappous to pay attention to her (Nik’s father and two uncles)!

IMG_3402 (800x600)

At first, Ellie was pretty confused about having two Yiayia’s (as in, we also call Nik’s grandmother, “Yiayia”).  But eventually she figured it out!IMG_3404 (800x533)

Four generations!IMG_3406 (800x534) IMG_3408 (800x600)

Our last night in Athens, we packed up, putting all of our warm-weather clothes into one suitcase, knowing that we wouldn’t be using them again on our vacation because…

we were off to England (again)!

December Sewing: Finally Cloth Napkin Nirvana?

Back a couple years ago, I claimed that by making two dozen more cloth napkins (for a total of 37), that I”d finally achieved cloth napkin nirvana (as in, only needing to wash napkins once a week).  That has turned out not to be true, now that we host a small group one night a week and have a toddler who likes to use cloth napkins.  Sometimes we get dangerously close to running out of napkins before I get around to laundry day again.  So on Saturday, I made 11 more, using up some fabric I just had lying around.

So we’ll see if 48 cloth napkins will be enough to achieve my unattainable goal!

OK, Fine, You Figured Me Out

Just as Ellie didn’t really have rabies and we didn’t really feed her pizza for her first food, we are also not planning on naming our child “Buster” or “Busterina”.

I still think that “Baby Bus” would be a cute name for a little baby though! 🙂  (And I’m sure Ellie would agree!)

Announcing…Our Top Baby Name Options for B2

We’ve finally nailed down the names for B2.

For a boy: Buster
For a girl: Busterina

Why such unusual names, you ask?  Ellie is currently in love with buses.  She lights up whenever she sees a bus.  She’s also careful to delineate between “big” buses and “baby” buses when she sees them.  It’s really important to us that Ellie be able to say her little brother or sister’s name correctly from the very beginning.  So we’ve decided that being able to call the baby, “Baby Bus” as a nickname will be a really great way for her to establish a strong connection with her little brother or sister right from the start.  We also think that B2 will really appreciate knowing that we named him/her after his/her big sister’s favorite inanimate object when she was two.

Besides, we loved Arrested Development and since we’re pretty sure this baby is a boy, we figure that naming him “Buster” would be a nice tribute to that.

It’s nice to have this taken care of!  We’re definitely ready for B2 to come now! 😉

KIOS: On Hiatus for Now

This post is part of my series, “Kickin’ It Old Skool: Why and How We Are Old-Fashioned” or KIOS for short.  If you’re new to the series, please read my disclaimer before continuing on.  I’m keeping a table of contents to this series here so you can see what I’ve already written about and what more there is to come.

I had grand plans for finishing this series before our new baby was born.  Then I had grand plans of writing and scheduling all the posts in the next couple weeks so that, even after the baby was born, the posts would keep showing up every Friday and you all would be so amazed with how I could do it all. 🙂

Then yesterday, I decided to actually think realistically and ask, “With what time?”  And so, KIOS is going on hiatus.  Hopefully, by March, we’ll be back to a new normal and I’ll feel able to devote time to real blog writing again.

I was looking forward to writing about why we don’t watch TV, why infrequent showering is great, why we use cloth wipes instead of toilet paper, why we don’t use our computer (or the Internet) on Sundays, why our bathroom cabinet is so empty, and why I don’t wear makeup anymore.

But, I am feeling the weight of “the baby is coming in five weeks, give or take two weeks” and have to accept that I can’t do everything.

So I’ll probably be popping in with a little bit of sewing, a lot of cute pictures of Ellie, maybe a few traveling pictures.  I just don’t have time to do much real writing now and these KIOS posts take more time than I have to give.

I’ll miss writing them.  I hope at least one or two of you out there will miss reading them.  And hopefully, they’ll be back in about three months!
