Poetry Thursday

This poem is a bit stark – but an interesting idea to ponder…

Noah

By Roy Daniells

They gathered around and told him not to do it,

They formed a committee and tried to take control,

They cancelled his building permit and they stole

His plans.  I sometimes wonder he got through it.

He told them wrath was coming, they would rue it,

He begged them to believe the tides would roll,

He offer them passage to his destined goal,

A new world.  They were finished and he knew it.

All to no end.

                            And then the rain began.

A spatter at first that barely wet the soil,

Then showers, quick rivulets lacing the town,

Then deluge universal.  The old man

Arthritic from his years of scorn and toil

Leaned from the admiral’s walk and watched them drown.

Happy Anniversary!

I’ve been teaching for four years so that means…

Happy 4th Anniversary Chris and Katie!!!I finished my student teaching, had a weekend to breath, and then took off for Oregon for the fun of the wedding week.  It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since then.

I managed to find this picture of the pre-wedding festivities.  I don’t who took it (maybe Rachel?) or who most of the people in the picture are but I do know the two people of honor!

We love you both!!

Week 3, Sithonia

Today, I [finally] continue the story of our Summer 2008 trip to Greece.  To see all of our pictures, click here.  For most of the pictures, Nik has mapped them so you can see exactly where in Greece they were taken.  If you missed it, here’s the whole list

Part 6 (of 12)

Nik’s mom is from the town of Nea Kallikratia, on the Halkidiki peninsula.  Kallikratia is on the main part of the peninsula and then the peninsula has three fingers extending down.  The first “finger” is fairly commercialized and touristy and the third “finger” is only accessible to men because it’s considered sacred in the orthodox faith and only monks and male visitors are allowed.  The second one is called Sithonia and that’s where we drove to spend the day.

We drove clockwise around the peninsula so we started on the east side in the morning.  Our basic plan was to drive to the first beach, snorkel, drive to the next beach, eat lunch and rest, drive to the next beach, snorkel and then drive home, hopefully not running out of energy or daylight!

The first beach was Kavourotrypes Beach- means “crab holes”.  It was a really beautiful beach, particularly once we figured out which parts of the beach were not nude.  That was a little uncomfortable at first!  The water was also incredibly clear.

On the drive to the next beach, we has wonderful views of Mt. Athos, which is the mountain at the very end of the 3rd finger, (the one I couldn’t visit).

Our next beach was Kalamitsi Beach.  I loved the snorkeling at this place.  We swam for a long time and saw these crazy things we called sea dragons (although I think they were really sea cucumbers).
They were creepy – they were expelling this weird, white stuff from their mouths and waving around.

We also saw lots of goats, running freely wherever they pleased.

The Sithonia Peninsula was really nice – it was a beautiful drive, a nice day trip, and a good change of pace.

to be continued…

Happy Annivesary!

My little sister has been married for a whole year.

Crazy.

Time is flying.

We love you both!

(I realize that this isn’t a wedding picture (or even one with Drew in it) but hey – pictures are good, right?  This is from when Rachel visited me for Spring Break in 2006 – it’s in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore.)

Misc.

I stayed home from school today.  I started getting a sore throat on Wednesday and by yesterday it was really bad.  So I decided to stay home.  It’s a good thing I did too because I didn’t manage to get out of bed until 9:00 and my voice is so hoarse I could do a really good Louis Armstrong impression (and I’m not kidding!).  I think that I probably would have lost my voice if I had to talk all day.  So hopefully, by just resting all day/all weekend, I’ll be fine by Monday.

In other news, we’re getting to see Michael Pollan in person tomorrow!!  We feel a bit like groupies, we’re so looking forward to this!  He’s coming to the Central Library downtown for a free lecture.  Supposedly, he has some new suggestions for how to eat responsibly because the industrial food machine has co-opted his In Defense of Food rules (like a 5-ingredient ice cream that really isn’t good for you).  Just one more reason to despise industrial food.  So if we learn anything new, I’ll share it with you!

And, this morning I made hot cereal from oatmeal, rye flakes, and barley flakes, which I mixed together myself.  It was really good! I got them at a health food store that I just found, which is within easy walking distance from my house.  The store is really tiny but they have lots of organic bulk foods and I’m excited about that!

And finally, go watch The Meatrix.  It’s hilarious and just reinforces our decision to never eat industrially raised meat again.  (I even think it’s hilarious and I’ve never seen the Matrix!)

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day!

To my own mother, my mother-in-law, my sister, my four sisters-in-law, and
all the many other mothers in my life,
thank you for the great gift of life that you’ve given and
all the care and work that you pour out and do every day.

I love you!

P.S. If you haven’t seen the “I’m the Mom” song/video yet, you should really watch it.  Hilarious.
