The difference an hour makes

Ellie has been sick with a stuffy nose since Saturday morning.  We’re going to the doctor today for her one-month appointment so I’m hoping he can tell me if we need to be worried about it.  But it’s been a hard past couple days.  Luckily, it was the weekend so Nik was here all day to help with the holding.  I was able to get some sleep that way.  But last night, she basically wouldn’t sleep unless I was holding her and wasn’t happy nursing.  So we spent a lot of hours trying to nurse, trying to sleep, and not being all that successful at either.

But around an hour ago, she finally nursed calmly and then fell asleep.  And let me put her down.  And I realized that I basically hadn’t put her down, except to use the bathroom, for about 15 hours.  Thankfully, blessedly, miraculously, she’s been asleep for about an hour and I’ve had the chance to do a few dishes, finish up one thing I had to mail today, and eat lunch.  She’s waking up now but oh, the gift of an hour.  What a difference  it makes.  I am grateful.

And through all of this, Ellie has been such a sweetheart – smiling at us through her discomfort and really not complaining.  We are blessed by her sweet spirit.

Another student message

I love Eliana and love being home with her but I miss my students too and all the interactions that I had with them.  Here’s another e-mail that I got this summer from one of my 8th graders from last year.

hello teacher , how are you? .well I hope you’re fine! I also hope you to send me pictures of your baby at birth. My friends and I miss you so much, but maybe one day we’ll see you.thanks for being a good teacher and for helped me in class, I will never forget the experiences that I lived with you when I was in school, thanks again!..I hope you’re having a nice summer and take care.

It makes my heart happy when I get e-mails like this because teaching can be a pretty thankless job and sometimes it’s easy to wonder if the kids are really benefiting from what you do.   And here Y (from the Dominican Republic) gave me a little bit of love and some not-too-bad English compared to where she started in the fall.  Very gratifying!

We miss Nana!

Last night, we actually had to do our own dishes and rock our own baby to sleep.  It was tough but somehow, we survived.

We were so blessed to have Mom here for 3 weeks and don’t know how we would have survived without her.

Mom and Ellie fell in love with each other.

Luckily, we don’t have a “grandma” for Ellie to run off to!

And now, we’re grateful that Yiayia only lives a few miles away!

And welcome to the double digits!  You’ll be here a long time!

Class is in session

Today, students, we have three objectives that we need to accomplish.

Objective #1: Ending the crankiness of family members (who shall remain unidentified) who are upset with me for not posting enough pictures.

Objective #2: Proving that Eliana’s cheeks are totally adorable and kissable.

Objective #3: Saying thank you.

So let us begin:

For Auntie Julie who convinced us to not get get rid of this hand-me-down onesie.  Nik thanks you especially, because they’re having tie-dye day at his high school next week for Homecoming and he’s going to show this picture to all of his classes.

For Uncle Jon and Auntie Leah who sent us this fun shirt (thanks!) and to all the other British sympathizers out there (like Auntie Julie)

For JinAe, who knitted Eliana this gorgeous sweater and hat!

For Betsy and Nikki, who gave us this super fun onesie

And now class, let’s review.  Are you less cranky?  Aren’t her cheeks super-cute?  Do you feel thanked?  Yes?  Then objectives accomplished!

News Flash!

The mei tai that I made works with little babies too!  Meggan and Rachel, Mom will show you how to do it when she gets home.  (Actually it’s not hard at all.  You basically just put the baby in the curled up “fetal” position on your front and tie the straps across the back rather than under the bottom.)  She’s still a little too small for me to be able to move quickly in it because her head isn’t really supported by it.  But I wore her in it when we were out today for appointments and it worked great.   And it’s making it possible for me to type this blog entry right now!

And in some unrelated notes:

1.  See those adorable cheeks?  Yeah – we were at the doctor’s office today and she weighs 9 pounds, 1 ounce now.  At 3 1/2 weeks, she’s two pounds, 2 ounces over her birth weight.  She’s going to become a pro body builder at this rate.  She’s getting chubby thighs and arms now too.

2. See that incredibly cute hat?  Kristen gets the credit for that one.  The yarn is amazingly soft, has a gorgeous vintage pink button for the chin strap that you can’t see, and it makes me want to learn how to knit.  We’re in love with it.  But more in love with Eliana of course.

Perhaps you will excuse our tardiness?

Because we have a good excuse?

Happy Late Birthday to Alex and Alex!

Three years ago, Nik and I gained a niece and a nephew on two sides of the country, within about 12 hours of each other, and they’re both named Alex!

Alexander and Alexandra, that is.

Happy 3rd Birthday Alex and Alex!

Love, Uncle Nik and Aunt(ie) Laura

(And yes, that’s Alex when he was only one but somehow I couldn’t find a good, more recent picture.)

We only drink whole milk around here

or “Why there haven’t been many blog posts lately.”

Eliana gained15 ounces in 9 days!!  So now she weights 7 pounds, 12 ounces after going down to 6 pounds, 9 ounces after birth.

I knew it felt like she was eating a lot!
