A few hard lessons I’ve learned already today

1. A baby cannot be rushed.  (Actually, I learned this lesson while nannying 6 years ago but I evidently forgot it.)

2. It’s not a good idea to start a baking project where the items have to come out at different times because they’re different sizes (mini-muffins, muffins, mini-loaves) while also needing to nurse your baby.

3. A happy baby can turn into a screaming baby in no time at all but then take forever to be convinced to turn back into a happy baby.

3. When it comes down to it, my most important  job right now is to take care of Ellie.  I have to let all my other priorities/goals go.  That’s a hard lesson for perfectionist me and one I’m sure I’ll have to keep on learning.

4.  Being a parent is hard – and incredibly wonderful too.

Resolved

One of my food resolutions for the year is to bake most, if not all, of the bread we eat.   I started today with Oatmeal Toasting Bread.  I made it with all whole-wheat flour and without the old dough (although I did save some for next time).  I’m planning to read more about baking bread and hope to starting baking with sourdough as well.  But in the meantime, it sure is nice to have the smell of freshly baked bread in our house!

*That’s two small loaves and two big loaves that you see in the picture.

We’re home!

After a long trip (starting at 6:00 am AK time and ending at 1:30 am EST), we’re back in our own home!

We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day with Nik’s family in Arlington, VA and then on Christmas night flew to Alaska to spend a week with all of my family.  Jon and Leah had flown in from England (via South Dakota) the week before so we had the absolute fun and joy of all being together for the first time in 2 1/2 years (since Rachel’s wedding).  From the original Judge 7, we’re up to 21!

It was so fun to have Ellie share her first Christmas first with her East Coast cousin Alex and then with all 8 of her Alaska/England cousins, Noah, Selah, Jonas, Addie, Ezra, Alex, Kaitlyn, and Grace!

While in Alaska, we found out that my sister Rachel and her husband are going to be having a girl in May.  So along with my brother Eric and his wife Meggan who are having a girl in March, we’re going to have five (5!) girl cousins under the age of 2!  Totally fun!

Today, I’m trying to unpack and recover from our trip home.  Ellie finally woke up at 3:00, having spent the entire day sleeping, only waking up a couple times to eat in her sleep.  I think the trip wore her out too!

We love you family and miss you already!

Handmade Christmas 2010 – Ellie’s present

I figured that I should probably sew my own daughter something for Christmas!  Her present got pushed to the last second though because well, she won’t know the difference.  And that’s a good thing she doesn’t know any different because I didn’t finish it.

I started with a bunch of strips of pink and green flannel of varying widths and patterns.

I pieced them using my random method, perfected from sewing Noah’s guitar strap cover.  I ended up with this large patchwork piece.

After that, I cut the patchwork strip into three pieces, sashed them with white flannel and added two large pieces of flannel (one pink, one green) for the back.  I didn’t get pictures taken of all of this yet.  I’m going to use another piece of flannel for the batting so that the quilt is closer to blanket weight and then bind it with a patchwork binding using all the flannels from the quilt.  More pictures to come once I finish it!

Handmade Christmas 2010 – the One-Year-Old girls

For Kaitlyn and Grace, I made soft color books.  I made one of these for Nik’s nephew last year but modified the idea quite a bit this year.  My favorite innovation is the hand-embroidered words on the front and back.  I’d never done hand-embroidery before and it was a fun way to enter the embroidery world.  I actually did much of this embroidery on the drive to our 37-week midwife appointment – and in a sports bar while Nik watched the US Open final (on the same day).  So yes, Jon and Rachel, I sewed your kids’ books in a bar.  Blame it on Nik! 🙂

I especially like the pink and brown pages and the blue and orange pages together are for Nik.

(And yes, this means that I had 34 fabrics, four each of red, orange, green, blue, brown, yellow, pink and purple plus two black and white prints, in my stash.  I didn’t have to buy any fabric in order to make these books.  This is partly because I made this project last year for Alex and partly because I just have way too much fabric!)

Handmade Christmas 2010 – Noah’s present

Last year, Noah got an electric guitar for Christmas so this year I made him a patchwork guitar strap cover, from this tutorial.  I heard that his favorite color was green so I chose a bunch of green fabrics, put them all in a bag, and pulled them out randomly to piece the patchwork strip.  I knew that I would have otherwise obsessed over the arrangement of the fabric and it would have taken me forever.  I’m actually a big fan of the random piecing method now – very fast and it turned out really well!  I also wasn’t sure if a 10-year old would think that this sort of thing was cool but he approved!

I especially like these trees.

Handmade Christmas 2010 – Addie’s present

For Addie (who is 4) I made her name in felt letters for her to hang over her bed – or whatever she wants!  I took the idea from this post but stitched them on machine instead of by hand and made them slightly bigger.

I want to make a set of these with all the letters of the alphabet for Ellie!

Handmade Christmas 2010 – Nikki and Andreas’s presents

For Nik’s brother and sister-in-law, I made a wood-carrying tote and a gathered clutch purse.  I added the words in wool felt, in case Andreas forgot what it was for! 🙂  I also especially love how I was able to cut the fabric so the bird is in the middle of the back of the clutch.  These were both really fun projects.

Handmade Christmas 2010 – Jonas’s present

For Jonas (who’s six), I made him a “trinket keeper” for him to carry around his “treasures and Legos” (Jonas’s words).  He told me that his favorite color was dark green and that his favorite animals were bugs and bunnies and crocodiles.  I managed to find some bugs for him anyway.  I ended up using D-rings instead of grommets.

“I want a wittle cup to fit a real life dragonfly in it in the pouch.”  (That’s what Jonas wants to use this for evidently.)
