A spring luncheon menu

Hosting a lunch in the spring is tricky when you also want to serve seasonal food.  There’s just not much growing yet.   This was the seasonal menu that we came up with for Ellie’s little baptism celebration:

hummus
spanikopita
homemade french bread
salad: spinach, asparagus, radishes, green onions, olives, feta, homemade balsamic vinegarette, homemade buttermilk dill dressing.

And for dessert?

Cake by my friend, former coworker, fellow Houghtonite and baker extraordinaire, Tara Jones!

Tara makes amazing cakes.  Check out this bowl of spaghetti cake!  The cake was delicious (almond raspberry) and beautiful too.  Thanks Tara!

Eliana’s Baptism

Eliana was baptized on Mother’s Day.  The same pastor who officiated at our wedding also did the baptism, which felt satisfying complete to me.

I was more affected than I thought I would by the sight of the members of our church standing and promising to help us raise Eliana to love and serve the Lord.  I’ve done the same thing many times my self but it certainly felt different to stand up in front and see many people promising to love Ellie and to help us.  I was a bit teary about it for most of the day actually!

After the baptism, we had a small lunch for our family and a few friends.  We also did a photo shoot with Ellie and her little cousin Luke!  (Also notice Ellie’s cross, a gift from her yiayia.)

At one point, Ellie held Luke’s hand!

Tina and I even managed to unwittingly coordinate our outfits!

We hope and pray that Ellie will grow up to love and serve the Lord!

Word to the Wise

Just because you’re trying to keep a baby busy and just because you want to show the world how the baby is now trying to lean way forward and maybe crawl and just because you’re trying to accomplish three other things and the baby is super happy and occupied – none of these are good reasons to give a baby a toy which will potentially break into many small choking hazards.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Don’t worry – I picked them up as soon as I took the picture!  Luckily Tina makes jewelry so she’ll be able to put it back into a bracelet for me.

Landscaping/Yardwork update (and a revelation)

The Update

I have added a page to our blog entitled “Landscaping the Castle”.  We live on two streets with royal names so we like to call our house the Castle.  And now we’re trying to get all our landscaping done!  I’m in the middle of making a master plan for everything we need to do in order to finally have a handle on every part of our yard.  Our house is on the corner and and we have many different areas  and levels to keep track of (rather than just a front yard and a back yard).  Sometimes I feel a bit crazy trying to keep track of all of it.

So, I’ve made a map, which you can see here.  I’ve categorized each part of the yard into edible or non-edible and labeled it.  So for example, I just finished making the mulch circle for our maple tree.  That’s the orange diamond in A1.

This is my latest accomplishment, which took me over a week to finish (in short bursts, remember).

Here’s the before (with a bit of work already done):

And here’s the completed “circle” (which is not entirely perfect but oh well).

In case you want to orient yourself with the map and this picture, I took it standing on our front porch and you can also see King George Rd, A1, A2, A3, the driveway, and A4 in this picture. I’m planning on refering this map whenever I post gardening/yardwork updates.

The Revelation

Now, I am fully aware that I am probably the only one who thinks that my map is really cool.  I had a really fun day last Friday, making the map as Ellie was sleeping in my arms.  While I was working around the house that day, I was thinking about how I could improve it.  I came up with the letter/number/color  identification scheme while folding laundry.

I was feeling a bit silly about enjoying making this map so much until I had a revelation.  Making this map (and other things that I’ve made over the past few months) is serving the same purpose in my life that making worksheets and handouts did when I was a teacher.  I took probably too much pleasure in making handouts for my students that were perfectly spaced and aesthetically pleasing.  I often found myself obsessing over margins, font size, and graphics.  All my handouts for a class looked uniform – I used the same font, formatted my titles the same way, etc.  I often asked myself, “Would I be annoyed by this if I was handed it in a classroom?  Or would I get pleasure from doing my work on it?”  If it didn’t please me, I kept tinkering with it.  Yes, that kept me at school longer than I might otherwise have been but I took pleasure from crafting these things for my students.

Over the past few months, I’ve made a house management schedule for myself, cutting diagrams for sewing projects, invitations for parties, etc.  I love the work of designing and producing something useful and beautiful.

So, even if no one else looks at this map, I will use it and think, “That is so useful and beautiful too”, and be glad that I took the time to make it.

Ellie is 7 months! (Spring Photo Shoot)

We are certainly privileged to have Dan as our friend – for many more reasons than this of course, but right now we’re grateful that he’s such a good photographer and so generous to us with his gifts.  As you can see here, he’s taken pictures of us for our engagement, wedding, and “we’re almost going to have a baby.”  And now, he took pictures of Ellie at 7 months.  I have lots of incredibly gorgeous pictures to share with you so expect more posts.

To start, I thought I’d give you the best of the best:

The only picture he missed was the one in which our heads collided.

More to come!

Enjoy your last year! (in your 20s that is!)

Happy Birthday Chris!

We love you!

(and thanks for giving me an excuse to put this picture of all my brothers on my blog – I’ve been wanting to for a long time!)

(for the non-family members reading this post, Chris is the one with the baby)

And for good measure, here’s the corresponding picture with the sisters-in-law (minus one)!

(Thanks for taking these great pictures at our wedding, Rachel!)
