Women’s Lib, middle school ESOL style

So I was attempting to help my two 4th graders (a boy and a girl) understand what cause and effect is.  The following conversation ensued:

Me:  Last night, I made dinner.  That’s the effect.  What’s the cause?  Why did I make dinner?  What made me make dinner?

The boy: (immediately responds) Your husband was hungry?

Me:  Maybe I was hungry!

The girl:  Yeah, maybe she was hungry!

At least they were engaged in the lesson.  I’m not quite sure they got cause and effect.  But at least we had a little women’s lib discussion.

P.S. For the record, in our house, yes, sometimes I do make dinner for my husband because he’s hungry and sometimes he makes dinner for me because I’m hungry and sometimes we make dinner together because we’re both hungry.  We’re liberated like that.
