Fun at the State Fair

A big horse:
And a little one:

One tired mama (we actually saw another mama pig giving birth.  Those piglets sure do shoot out quickly!!)

Our friends Tim and Sharla and Annaliese (from covenant group) – we had the fun of an unplanned encounter with them!

Yum, Yum – smoked turkey leg!

And this jalapeno pepper is from our own garden but we should have entered it into the State Fair.  We probably could have won the “Freak Mutant of Nature Award”!

Some Blessings of the First Week of School

1.  It’s been blessedly cool.  One of my schools doesn’t have air conditioning but we haven’t even missed it.  It’s been the coolest first week of school of my teaching career.

(And, by the way, can anyone else believe that this is my 5th (fifth!!) year of teaching!?!)

2. Working at 2 schools means that I only have to come up with an outfit every other day.  AWESOME!!!!

3. At my elementary school, the music teacher is a Houghton grad and a believer.  She only graduated 2 years before I did and we both definitely recognized each other.  So cool!  So I have one friend and ally there and am making more friends.

All in all, a good first week (that’s almost over) and then a 3-day weekend!

Oregon Pictures

Hello everyone!  Zona and others have requested Oregon pictures. And they will come eventually, I promise.  It’s just that there’s this little thing called school.  And yeah, it started for teachers on Monday and the kids come next Monday.  So we’re a tad busy.In the meantime, to tide you over, here’s a couple of my “favorite shots”.

1.  We had the fun of touring the Tillamook cheese factory.  While enjoying the free samples, I became more than a little annoyed.  Can you spot the source of my annoyance?  (The cheese, by the way, was delicious.)

2.  Thanks to the wonders of digital technology and a nifty little cord that Nik brought along, we had fun with the TV and our digital camera.  Here’s one stellar example:

I bet you can’t wait to see more now, right?

Isn’t Maybe cute?

Our friends have a very cute dog named Maybe.  He’s in a contest to win at least $500, which will help Ryan and Heather pay for the surgery he just had to have.  Ultimately, they could even win a million.  So go to his website here then click on the “Vote Here” box and vote!  You’ll have to register to vote but it’s easy and then you don’t have to register again.  If you remember to vote every day, that would be awesome!!  We get to vote every day through August 29th.

Some Scientific Evidence for a Secret Frustration of Mine

Sometimes I see babies at church sit in their infant car seats, aka “Baby Buckets” for the whole service and then sometimes through Sunday School too.  They get upset and their parents do their best to comfort them – while they’re still strapped in!  I don’t have any children and I apologize if I’m upsetting any of my readers out there who are mothers but I still get so frustrated when I see this.  I think, “For Pete’s sake, just hold your baby!”  I realize it’s easier to leave them in there but it just doesn’t seem to be right.  And I know enough women (namely my three sisters-in-law) to know that it’s very possible to parent a baby without using the infant car seat as a holder.

And so here’s some scientific proof as to why it’s bad to leave your baby in the car seat for longer than necessary – basically, it makes their breathing less efficient and so the oxygen saturation level in their blood goes down.  The recommendation is to only keep infants in their car seats for the amount of time that they are in the car – in other words, use them for what they were created for.

Home again, went away, and now home again (for now)

1. Off to England
2. Back again, home for 14 hours.
3. left for Dan Gerding’s wedding
4. was the wedding “I’m good at bossing people around” coordinator for the weekend.
5. The wedding started almost 30 minutes late (lost relatives) – the groomsmen and the pastor kept themselves occupied.  Nik was the videographer!
6a. Stood in uncomfortable shoes for 8 1/2 hours – have the blisters to prove it.
6b. Had fun being in charge – wouldn’t mind getting paid to do that every once in a while!
7. Shopped at the outlets this morning – scored a few good purchases.
8.  Arrived home at 6:30 pm
9.  Leaving again on Tuesday for Oregon.

It’s been a whirlwind past few days!

Kaitlyn Joy pictures (plus a few more)

Here’s a few pictures for the family!  I’m having a wonderful time here and can’t believe I have only one more day here.Don’t let this picture fool you – she was about to scream (and she’s in the dress from Nana!).

This one is a true smile though!

Stretching in the sunshine (at Leeds Castle):

Jon and Kaitlyn climbing the stairs (to infinity and beyond!)

The family (and Leeds Castle)!

Lots of sleeping and relaxing going on here!

And a gratuitous picture from the roses in front of the Oval Cafe

I’ll try to put up a few more pictures once I get home!  I’ve fallen in love with Kaitlyn, that’s for sure!

9:25

And I’m still awake!  I did it – no sleeping the whole day and I even held a sleeping Kaitlyn for quite a long time!  Jon did have to intervene a couple times and I also had to do some jumping jacks, plus we took a long walk.  So I made it to normal bedtime!  Good night!

I’m here!

I’m safely arrived in Harpenden, having endured a 2 hour delayed take-off.  With a strong tail wind, we only landed an hour late but I still missed the first bus to St. Albans by 2 minutes.  So I had an hour to spend in the train station before my 1.5 hour bus ride.  And now I’m here, getting to hold Kaitlyn and trying to stay awake.  Jon says that if I stay awake until 8:00, then I should be good to fall asleep.  So that’s what I’m aiming for!  Kaitlyn is already turning into such a fun little girl with lots of personality.  She’s been smiling at me, although mostly she’s just slept the whole day away – unusual for her, I’m told.  She’s more of a cat-napper.  We decided that Auntie Laura is giving her tiredness to her niece!
