Construction and beginning again

I taught in our school district for the last five years.  In those five years, I taught at 3 middle schools.  I started at a new school in 2005, 2008, and 2009.  All three times, the school was under construction as I moved in my things and prepared to start teaching.

This year, I didn’t go back to school.  I’m now a stay-at-home wife (at least for a few more weeks) and guess what?  Our house is under construction (or at least, we’re getting some work done on it.)  I’m listening to construction noises right now, just like I did at those three schools during the first week of teacher preparation before the kids came. (Nik is at school right now, doing just that.)

Sense a pattern emerging?

Christmas in August

Last weekend, I was in charge of a craft-making party for the women at our church.  We made felt Christmas ornaments to sell at the Advent Bazaar in December, to benefit the mercy ministries at our church.  I searched the Internet, found these designs, sewed a sample of each, and then together, we all made 21 more.  So now we have 26 to sell.  We’re hoping to have more parties with more ornaments!

Aren’t they cute?  (And now that I know how to make them, I’m definitely making some for our own tree!)

Likes and Dislikes

Some things from the past week that I DON’T like:

1. Unasked for, insensitive, badgering parenting advice.  I suppose I’m just going to have to develop a thick skin about this kind of stuff but seriously?  Do you really think I’m (we’re) making parenting decisions lightly, with no thought whatsoever?  Or that I’m 18 and I’ve never seen a baby before?

2.  Hot weather and swelling feet.

Some things I DO like:

1. Ripping fabric – why did I never do this before?  I’m working on another sewing project and last night I got almost the whole thing cut out in about an hour.  It had tons of pieces but rather than measuring and cutting, I measured and ripped and it was SO fast.  And so straight.  I’m totally converted.

2.  Progress on the work that we need to get done on our house.

3. Watermelon (weird, I know because I’ve hated watermelon my whole life.  But this week, we got such a good, sweet one from Ed, my favorite farmer, that I’ve been eating tons of it.  Must be a pregnancy thing.)

4.  Kind, generous people who give to us, both of their baby things and their experience (not advice) as parents.  Helps me to feel less negative about Dislike #1 above.

5.  The La Leche League. I went to a meeting yesterday and there is help, wisdom, and companionship there.  I am grateful.

6.  Lots of squirrels in our dogwood tree.  They’re eating the little berries that the dogwood tree makes and they are SO cute!

Fun fabric + quick project = satisfying afternoon

My friend Sharla gave me a bunch of fun fabric as part of my shower present – she used it to wrap her other present, which went along with the “green” theme of the shower.  (She very thoughtfully gave me the coordinating fabric too!)

I used some of it yesterday to make a nursing cover, using this tutorial.

I like the little birds peeking out:

(And see the little bit of pink in the first picture?  That’s my stomach.  I guess I’m officially getting bigger if I can’t even keep my stomach out of pictures!)

Sewing Club Summer Edition 2010

Anne, Heather, and I decided to chose a much harder project for our Sewing Club Summer Edition 2010 adventure (at least harder than the one we chose for last summer).  So we chose the Tabitha Bag, a gorgeous bag that I’ve admired for a long time from the blog, Flossie Teacakes.  It turned out to be quite complicated but oh so satisfying to make in the end.  This was my first time sewing with linen.  And yes, it’s hard to sew with it.  But I love how the bag turned out and I even already had one offer to buy one should I decide to make them as a business!  (This coming from a Crate and Barrel employee!)

We were particularly attracted to this bag because of all the gorgeous details, such as the pleats and narrow fancy fabric on the outside and the additional fancy fabric strip on the inner pocket.

I am also a big fan of the polka dots that I chose for the lining!

We do need to take a picture of all three of us with our awesome Tabitha bags!

Christmas in August

For some reason, I had crazily swollen feet yesterday.  So I needed a project to keep me busy while still sitting.  Enter the pinecone wreath.  Actually, the puff ball wreath or whatever these things are called.

I’ve loved them ever since I saw them for the first time during my freshman year at Houghton.  We don’t have these kind of trees in Alaska so I was fascinated by them.  I think I even saved some to give to Mom.  (Right, Mom?).  I decided to make a wreath out of them, based on this tutorial.  I started it last December but didn’t get far.  The only complication I didn’t anticipate?  Pinecones have flat bottoms.  These don’t.  Enter the hot glue gun and LOTS of glue!  A few hours later, here it is!  It’s not quite finished – I still have to pull off all the hot glue strings and add some ribbon.  But it’s done enough for me to be proud of it!

A couple random thoughts

(Because I can’t seem to marshall my more serious thoughts!)

1. Outside of our office windows, we have a beautiful dogwood tree that is often full of squirrels and birds, coming and going.  I love sitting at my desk and watching them.  The other day, Nik watched a squirrel take a nap on a branch – have you ever seen a squirrel do that?!  I’ve often thought/hoped that our kids would also love sitting/standing at the windows and watching the animals too, particularly on the days when it’s too hot to go outside.  I had the fun of watching Jonas and Ezra do just that when they were here visiting and thought, “I knew it!”  (I just watched a squirrel eat a little snack, which made me think of it again.)

2.  I don’t think our baby likes the computer.  Every time I sit here, he/she makes all kinds of crazy motions, as if trying to escape – either that or force me to choose a new position away from the computer.  So perhaps this baby will help me in my evaluation of how much screen time I consume every day!  (Read Hamlet’s Blackberry for an idea of some of what I’m thinking about.)
