I suppose it’s about time I sewed something for Nik, right? This was a fun and fast project for him – a sunglasses case (similar to the one I made for myself). This was unintentional but I like how the quilting came out looking like pinstripes!
So here you have it – a dress suit sunglasses case! 🙂

Laura, I totally need a tutorial for this! Todd has been asking me to make him a sunglasses case for ever, and I have been avoiding it because I didn’t know how. Can you help me? (It’s very handsome, by the way!)
Here’s the tutorial for the sunglasses case that I used for the first couple times I made these: http://sweet-verbena.blogspot.com/2011/08/glasses-sleeve-tutorial.html
For the past couple, I’ve completely changed how I construct them and also added the little velcro closure. I think the way I do it now makes it easier to make the seams line up perfectly and it’s just easier to sew. But – I’d clearly be delusional if I told you that I would have a tutorial done for you before the baby comes! 🙂 So you can use that tutorial above and make a perfectly fine one. The Velcro closure is easy – I think I cut a scrap about 2 inches by 4 inches (or something like that) to turn into the closure – using 3/4 inch velcro.
And thanks for the handsome comment – I find it really hard to sew anything that doesn’t end up with a hint of femininity. Most fabric out there just is feminine, you know? Anyway, Nik liked this so I was happy! 🙂
Okay, let me just say that yours is WAY better looking than hers!!! But it’s helpful to have the basic information. Can you let me know what size you made your strips? And I will def be adding the velcro tab.
Thanks Zona! That’s just the perfectionist in me! 🙂 I construct them basically using the same method as this bag in case that helps (except I cut the lining in one piece too so it ends up being a big tube at first) – http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html. Basically – I sew the tops together first instead of sewing the sides and then sliding the two halves into each other. I sew the velcro (both sides) on first before sewing the outside to the lining.
As for size, I just use the sunglasses to eye it so each one is slightly different in size – I think Nik’s was maybe 5″ wide? I don’t remember how tall. I cut the outside fabric, put it on a bigger piece of batting, quilt it, and then square it up – it will get a little wonky, especially if you don’t have a walking foot to quilt it with. Then I cut the lining to match and sew. Hope that helps a little!
