Emerging

Our time of cocooning ourselves at home is over and we’re slowly emerging into real life.  Last week, Ellie, Mark and I even managed a quick trip to the grocery store.  Not just any grocery store either – we went to Whole Foods.  Only the best for Mark’s first outing! 😉

We also managed to make it to church on Sunday.  It was so cool to see Mark welcomed into his church family.  Even though we don’t see many of these people outside of church, I still felt a palpable excitement in them to see Mark, to welcome him to church, and to see our family growing and changing.

Next week, Nik starts coaching tennis and then we’ll really be off and running.

I’m feeling pretty good.  The two-year-old is finally starting to sleep better, the 6-week old is sleeping fine himself*, and we’re starting to develop a new daily rhythm around here.  I even baked blueberry zucchini bread and pumpkin peach cranberry muffins today!

I must admit to feeling a bit panicky this weekend about hopping back into our normal activities.  It’s been nice to be really calm and laid-back for a few weeks.  But it’s also good to get going again and I think Ellie needs to see her friends a little bit more.

So, real life, here we come.  The 40 days are over and we’re ready to go!

*Please don’t read “sleeping fine himself” as “sleeping through the night.”  He still wakes up at least 2-3 times to nurse at night, often more.  It’s just that he and I have figured out how to nurse (on his part) and sleep (on my part, once I’ve helped him latch on) at the same time.  So our nights are [finally] not too stressful.

Art, By Ellie

Recently, Ellie has started drawing actual objects rather than random lines, all without any prompting from us to do so.  I love to see how her mind works!

Confessions of A Tummy Time Dropout (Or A Conscientious Objector)

Around here, we don’t bother with tummy time.  I know.  Heretical.  (Don’t tell my pediatrician.)  We tried it once or twice with Ellie and she hated it.  By hated it, I mean, hated it with a passion.  So it never seemed worth the trouble to try to force her to do something she hated that strongly.  Plus, I’d read somewhere** that when you wear your baby, she gets all kinds of core muscle practice as well because it’s such good exercise holding up her head while your body is moving – therefore, making tummy time unnecessary.  It also never made sense to me that a few minutes of day of tummy time could counteract all the other time that a baby spends on her back (in terms of having a flat spot on the head).

So, we’re following the same path with Mark – no need for tummy time, other than the tummy-to-tummy time that he gets with us.

**It turns out that this whole issue of wearing vs. tummy time is quite controversial out there in blogland.  I tried to find the article I’d read and besides the fact that I really have no memory of what specifically I read, there are kazillions of articles and blog posts out there about how terrible or terrific tummy time is for your baby.

And here’s my disclaimer:  Although this post does have a bit of a joking tone to it, dropping out of doing tummy time isn’t something that we’ve taken lightly.  We kept careful watch on Ellie, making sure she was meeting her developmental milestones (at her own pace clearly but still growing and changing) and also tried to keep tabs on the shape of her head.  So we didn’t say, “Tummy time – whatev,  it doesn’t matter” without any thought to the matter.  We’ll take the same approach with Mark.  He’s definitely doing fine now – already stiffening his legs, standing up on my lap, lifting his head and looking all around.  We wear or hold him the majority of the time.  So we’re not worried about him and tummy time doesn’t seem necessary at this time.  We’ll reevaluate our decision if we have to.  I would expect that every parent would do his or her own research and make the best decision for his/her own baby.

Love

Love to you all!

IMG_5088 (800x600)And yes, we really did take that picture ourselves, on a fun little trip we took to Orlando, in late December 2008.  That was our trip that went like this, “We have to use these vouchers before they expire so let’s see how far south they can take us.  Orlando?  Great!  And now, let’s see if we can spend a whole 48 hours in Orlando with doing a single thing related Disney.”  Did we succeed?  Yes, we did!”

February Sewing: In Gratitude (Times Three)

I had my six-week postpartum appointment yesterday.  All is well!  We wanted to give our midwife and nurses something to express our gratitude for how wonderfully kind and supportive they were to us during Mark’s long labor and delivery.

Nik’s mom made them baklava (lucky for us she made an extra pan!) and I made them these little zip pouches.

I used the tutorial from Noodlehead (slightly modified); I especially love the little bit of detail that ends up on the bottom of the bag.

The lining of the yellow bag is my favorite although I do like them all.

Even though these pouches are quite simple, it still felt like a big task to find the time to make them (basically when Ellie was sleeping and Nik was home to hold Mark).  So don’t be expecting too many more sewing posts in the near future!

It did feel nice to be back home at my sewing machine again.

Ellie Cuddles With Yiayia After Her Bath

Look at Ellie!  Doesn’t she look so amazingly grown up?

(Or maybe it’s just the contrast with Mark?!)

P.S. In case inquiring minds want to know why all the drawers are open in the dresser in the background, it’s new and although it’s just bare wood, we’re still leaving the drawers open for several weeks until the wood smell dissipates.  Thankfully, Ellie hasn’t been tempted to play in them!

The Special Outfit

We bought a special sleeper for Ellie to wear home from the birth center and we have it in her little box of memories.  We wanted to have something similar for Mark .  We ended up buying him (who at the time, we only knew as B2) a little screen printed onesie from Red Prairie Press, which we found at Holiday Heap.

Isn’t it adorable?  I’ll be sad when he outgrows it!

All the credit goes to Nik for this one – he’s the one who chose it!

“Mark’s” Busy Book

If you’ve been reading my blog for a year or two, then you may remember that I’ve been part of making several baby quilts (here’s Anne’s, Steph’s, Betsy’s, and Heather’s).  Those four women surprised us with a Busy Book for Mark, which Ellie has decided really belongs to her.  We love it – it’s made from felt (except for the cover) and has so many fun activities.

Ellie loves to carry it around:

The cover (made by Anne) has adorable bees:

Ellie’s current favorite page is the barn with the sheep, chicken, and pig.  Every time she’s finished playing with it, they have to go back into the barn, “to nap”.

014 (533x800)the chicken, for your inspection (with the barn on the floor in the background)

Thank you so much, my friends!  It has already kept Ellie busy many times when I really needed the help.  Hopefully Ellie will let Mark play with it when he gets big enough!

What? Your Newborn Isn’t Sleeping in a Real Bed Already?

In attempt to take the mommy wars to the next absurd level, we decided that because we don’t have a crib for Mark, he should just be sleeping in a real bed already.

Sorry, Ellie, your baby will have to find somewhere else to sleep.

010 (800x533)

He looks pretty comfortable, don’t you think?  And that quilt fits him just right!

011 (800x533)

It was a little difficult to nurse him lying down in there though so we decided that it wasn’t worth winning the “how soon can you get your baby into a toddler bed?” race and so he’s back in bed with us! 🙂
