This morning early, my good friend Kristen called me to see if Ellie and I wanted to meet her and her two little girls for a fun outing at the zoo. I was supposed to go to the moms’ group at my church this morning but Ellie was so grumpy (from waking up at 5:45) that I figured it would probably be a disaster to attempt that. So we decided to play hooky and go to the zoo instead!
It was Ellie’s first trip to the zoo and her first time in a stroller and she enjoyed both.
However, that is not the point of this blog post.
The point is that while we were there, just a few minutes into our visit, I saw a student wearing the uniform of the middle school where I taught last year. I thought, “Hmm, that’s funny. Whatever.” And then I saw five of my students walking by!! It was the Pakistani contingent of brothers along with their Thai friend. After lots of fun exclaiming and hugging and admiring of the baby, I figured out that today was the annual ESOL field trip and so ALL my students were at the zoo!! HOW COOL!!!! So as we walked, taking our time, more of my students caught up to us, including M (from El Salvador) who was my favorite student last year. (Read more about her here.)
The look on M’s face when she saw me was priceless. She was so excited to see me and gave me the biggest hug. And then as soon as she let go, she gave me another one. Then they saw Ellie and the cell phones came out for pictures, pictures, pictures – pictures with me and pictures with Ellie. Pretty soon, there was a cluster of 8-10 middle school girls around the stroller, exclaiming about how cute she was and how fun. I saw some of the teachers I taught with last year too. Even this year’s 6th graders were taking pictures of me and they don’t even know me. That’s when I felt famous!
It was so fun to see those precious kids and have them meet my precious baby.
Was it a coincidence that on the spur of the moment, Kristen called me to invite me to the zoo? And that I decided to be spontaneous, ditch the previous made plans and go? I don’t think so. I think the Lord put that together for me – to encourage me, to give me one more fun story to tell about school, and to let those kids meet Ellie. They were so excited for her to come last year and it’s really neat that they got to meet her.
I’m still grinning.
I’m not sure why but she was definitely happy and excited this day!
1. She evidently got tired of not being fed any solid food (we will start someday, I promise) because I found something a little weird in her diaper yesterday. It looked suspiciously like [slightly digested] paper. So I guess her first food was paper!
2. She has jet lag. Without our knowing it, she must have spent a couple days in the middle of the Atlantic because for the last couple days, she seems to be on a routine about an hour and a half ahead of us. She wants to go to bed at six and wake up at five. Somehow we have to break this jet lag! I will say that it’s awfully nice and cool in the wee hours of the morning – s0 much better than the very hot sun.
3. It was in the eighties yesterday so we ate dinner outside in the shade on our lawn. Ellie has spent plenty of time outside but this was her first experience with a fairly strong wind. It was nice and warm but still gusting pretty hard. It was so much fun to see her catch her breath in surprise every time a gust came by her! She would take a sharp intake of breath, blink a few times, and then grin at us! There are so many new things to experience when you’re a baby!
Here’s a gratuitously cute picture to start your morning off right!
“Let me see that sock!”
Ellie’s new favorite game – tug-o-war!
(We have to turn on the video camera carefully these days or else Ellie just looks straight at it so that’s why many of the videos this week will start out a little weird.)
Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!
Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Lo! the Sun’s eclipse is over, Alleluia!
Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia!
Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!
Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!
Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!
Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!
Ellie and Nik with the “Happy Easter” postcard from Nik’s Yiayia and his uncle.
Happy Easter everyone!
This is part of the yardwork that I accomplished this week:
A fully weeded and prepped bed for Swiss chard (which Nik promptly planted). We’re looking forward to lots of Swiss chard this year!
Nik also worked hard preparing our raised beds for spring planting and planted arugula, several kinds of lettuce, radishes, and beets. We sadly missed the pea window so we’ll have to wait until fall for those.
He also picked our first harvest of the season!
Just kidding! He did find those in the garden but they are actually carrots which we missed picking last fall and they over-wintered in the ground. The greens were still green!
This is my first attempt in a long time (since high school) to make free-form bread. It tasted good but the crust wasn’t nearly crunchy enough. I think I needed higher heat and a little moisture. The bread quest continues. We haven’t bought any bread since before Christmas! (Except for pita – I haven’t tackled making pita in quantity yet.)
